I will be the first to admit that this odd mix of weather we’ve been having has left me a bit skeptical about the coming weeks – but with two straight days of warm sunshine and clear skies, it’s impossible not to feel hopeful. I was privileged to make a trip this morning to Westergaard Kennels with my mother-in-law and sister-in-law. We took the littlest girls on a very impromptu field trip to see the miniature horses and a whole lot of Goldens! And it wasn’t surprising that Grammy left with a new little lady in her lap, Rosie.
Now to get the back story on this, I will tell you that my in-laws and our family have been through some-version-of-hell the past several months. Within the past year, my mother-in-law has lost a dog, her husband, her father, her oldest and dearest horse, and another dog. That’s mostly in the past 4 months, and it’s not even counting another in-law’s loss of a parent, and a the loss of another’s beloved neighbor. In their former bustling and busy home now resides two widows … and two very noisy parrots.
It was such a pleasant surprise to hear that she was puppy shopping so soon after dealing with so much loss, and it came as an even greater surprise to hear this morning that she was going to look at one near our home. I sort of expected her to look around a bit, take her time, not get attached – and make sure that she found a dog that would be the right fit. But it was evident from the moment that the kennel owner came out with this little, panting, golden, boundless puff-ball … that Grammy was definitely going home today with a new friend.
I feel hopeful today, with the sunroof opened and the baby rocking in her car seat to the upbeat music. But mostly because Rosie will most definitely bring so much joy to their home, along with the promise of new life in our midst!
